As part of its update of the work programme Horizon 2020 (2014–2020), the Commission has announced a call for applications for additional financing of European Universities.

The call for applications will be issued in two parts:

  1. The first part addresses the 17 alliances of the first pilot call already selected under the Erasmus+ programme and is to take place in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (April-June 2020). The EU Commission has already informed the alliances about further application modalities.
  2. The second part is scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2020 (July-September), after the further (expected) 24 alliances are selected in the second pilot call under the Erasmus+ programme (announcement of this selection anticipated in July 2020).

The call for applications will not, as is otherwise common in the programme, be published for all interested parties, only the selected alliances can submit proposals.

For each alliance, 2 million euros are budgeted, i.e. a total of 34 million euros for the selected 17 alliances and 48 million EUR for the expected 24 new alliances. This financing is intended to support the institutional reform of higher education institutions. Funding is provided for projects which strengthen the research and innovation dimension of European Universities, create links between education and research, and prepare synergies between the successor programmes Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ (from 2021).
