The EU research programme Horizon 2020 (from 2021: Horizon Europe) will provide additional funding for a research dimension of European Universities under the chapter “Science with and for society”.

The call for applications will be issued in two parts:

  1. The first part is aimed at the 17 alliances already selected under Erasmus+ in the first pilot call. To the press release from 22 July about the selection under Horizon 2020
  2. The second part is scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2020 (July-September), and aimed at the further 24 alliances in the second pilot call under the Erasmus+ programme (More about the selection under Erasmus+).

The calls for applications are not, as is otherwise common in the programme, be published for all interested parties. Only the selected alliances can submit proposals.

For each alliance, 2 million euros are budgeted, i.e. a total of 34 million euros for the selected 17 alliances and 48 million EUR for the expected 24 new alliances. This financing is intended to support the institutional reform of higher education institutions. Funding is provided for projects which strengthen the research and innovation dimension of European Universities, create links between education and research, and prepare synergies between the successor programmes Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ (from 2021).

In the new EU research programme Horizon Europe from 2021, cooperation with the European Universities initiative shall also be further expanded.
