The Communication on "Building a European Area of Education by 2025" of September 2020 announces a Council Recommendation for a "European Approach to Micro-credentials" in 2021. In preparation for this approach, the European Commission has now launched a public consultation. It is open until 19 March 2021.
The new European approach to micro-credentials aims to promote trust in this new form of qualification in formal and non-formal learning in Europe and to take all necessary steps for its wider use, transferability and recognition by 2025. It is hoped that micro-credentials will lead to a widening of learning opportunities for all and contribute as flexible learning tools in the context of lifelong learning. With the consultation, the European Commission has also published a "roadmap" which describes the objectives and actions in detail.
