The Communication on "Building a European Area of Education by 2025" of September 2020 announces a Council Recommendation for a "European Approach to Micro-credentials" in 2021. In preparation for this approach, the European Commission has now launched a public consultation. It is open until 19 March 2021.

On 2 February, the European Commission announced the formal launch of the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe (2021 to 2027). Approximately 95.5 billion euros (in current prices) will be available for the programme over the next seven years - an increase of 30% compared to the previous programme.
