The European Commission has rejected the association of individual regions such as Scotland or Wales with Erasmus+. In Switzerland, on the other hand, the universities are calling for the negotiations to be reopened.
At the end of February 2021, the EU member states agreed on a new common framework for European educational cooperation 2021-2030. This is closely aligned with the goals for creating an European Education Area by 2025.

On 28 January 2021, the new Erasmus+ app was officially released. The launch of the app is part of the further shaping of a more digital, greener, more social and more inclusive Erasmus+ for the new generation of programmes from 2021-2027.
The Erasmus+ budget reached a new record high in 2018 with 2,8 Billion EUR (an increase by 10% compared to the previous year), according to the annual report of the European Commission.
The trilogue negotiations on the future Erasmus programme are ongoing. The crux of the negotiations between Council, Parliament and Commission is the European Parliament's call for more codetermination in programme development.
Germany has become the most important non-englishspeaking host country for international students, but also more german students and researchers are going abroad.
The Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) has published a reflection paper about the topic "Internationalisation for all? Wider inclusion in the internationalisation of higher education".
