Attracting and Retaining Talent for AI in Europe

The Brussels Office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invited to its first event of the year 2024: Attracting and Retaining Talent for AI in Europe on 24 January 2024 from 09:00-13:15 CET at Comet in Brussels.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not only a powerful technological development and a societal gamechanger, it also requires talented individuals to manage its complexities. The human side to AI therefore not only includes the debate on an ethical usage, but also on who will be the drivers of the change. Where will the talent to develop algorithms or programme applications come from? How can we attract them to Europe and provide favourable conditions to stay?

In the context of the European Year of Skills, this seminar treated various aspects of attracting and retaining talent for AI in Europe. It focused on training programmes at Master and PhD level, initiatives to attract talented Postdocs and shed light on the need for upskilling of the labour force.

The seminar was structured in two sessions:

  1. The first one introduced the policy objectives related to the attraction and retention of talents for AI in Germany, by presenting the DAAD Zuse Schools of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and the Postdoctoral Networking Tour in AI.
  2. The second session widened the perspective by presenting national case studies from other EU member states and reflected on European policies focusing on attracting talent to the EU.
